Manatawny Still Works Releases Special Barrel First Cask-Strength Aged Whiskey Limited To 100 Bottles
On Saturday, February 28, Manatawny Still Works will make available their first single-barrel, cask-strength whiskey. Just 100, hand-numbered bottles will be available at the Still Works and will be sold on a first come, first serve basis with a limit of two bottles to each patron.
“We expect the cask strength release to sell out quickly,” offered Randy McKinley, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for MSW. “I’m thinking there will be a line out the door for this. It’s just that special.”
Manatawny Still Works released their first aged whiskey on December 5, 2014– the anniversary of the repeal of prohibition– to critical acclaim. Indeed, Manatany Still Works’ batch offering made a splash with the release of 1920 bottles (prohibition became official in 1920) but their next small batch offering promises to be just as buzzworthy.
At 120.8 proof, the cask strength version of MSW’s barrel aged American whiskey possesses a dynamic spirit and is the distillery’s strongest and most complex spirit to date.
“It’s surprising how much nuanced taste variation one notices from barrel to barrel,” adds master distiller, Max Pfeffer. “This barrel stood out above all others and we are excited to offer it as unique release.”
Friends and fans of Manatawny Still Works have come to appreciate the small batch offerings and special release events for which the craft has become famous. Manatawny’s small batch releases underscore the focus and specialization required to be considered a true craft spirit distiller.
“The cask-strength whiskey’s flavor profile is unique,” says Pfeffer who is becoming well known for producing a complete line of excellent craft spirits. ”With the fresh-cut oak, butterscotch and vanilla pushing forward, this strong American whiskey will create a memory with every sip.”

Manatawny Still Works has released their first aged whiskey of their Small-Batch Whiskey Series, Batch01.
The handcrafted spirit maker's J. Potts Whiskey and T. Rutter Rum – the distillery's initial offerings and salutes to local historical figures – have people talking, and the tasting room in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, has become a hip, local hot spot to chill to live music and enjoy popular guest food trucks.
But what the people really want from the micro-distillery is a signature product with character, and that takes time.
As the distillery's signature Pennsylvania Whiskey was slowly aging in the new oak cooperage that graces the tasting room, the Manatawny Still Works team decided to do something unique for the growing crowd of anticipatory whiskey drinkers.
"Crafting young whiskeys allows us to use different raw materials, techniques and times in the barrel to offer unique batches featuring distinct flavor profiles," said Max Pfeffer, Manatawny's founding distiller. "Each Manatawny Still Works' young whiskey in our Batch Series will be a limited release in numbered bottles."
Manatawny Still Works' Batch01, released on December 5, was limited to 1,920 specially labeled bottles. Not coincidentally, United States prohibition – the nationwide ban on the sale, production, importation and transportation of alcoholic beverages that lasted 13 years – started in 1920.
The first batch in the series of one-off whiskeys included three separate distillations blended together and then barreled in late March. The mash billconsists of a mixture similar to the distillery's J. Potts White Whiskey: 42% malt, 41% wheat, 13% oats and 4% rye. The variety of grains gives this whiskey a unique and complex flavor profile. The young whiskey was aged for 226 days in new, thirty-gallon honeycomb barrels. The honeycomb design increases the surface area of the barrel allowing more wood sugars to be dissolved quicker, and the result is an oak-forward whiskey.
Oats and rye provide a pleasing spiciness that round out the character of Batch01, while notes of oak and smoked cherry in the nose complement nuanced pear, vanilla and new-wood flavors. Malt provides some up-front sweetness while wheat softens thisManatawny Still Works spirit's finish. Batch01's intriguing flavor profile combined with the bold character from the new white American oak, gives one a glimpse of Manatawny Still Works' and American craft distilling's potential.
"I can't tell you how awesome it is to be able to enjoy some whiskey that has taken our blood, sweat and tears to create," continued Pfeffer, whose dog Piper –the distillery mascot – is often at his heels as he works. "The best part is that Batch01 is better than I ever imagined it would be. It makes me look forward to Batch Whiskey 02."
The distillery will produce future offerings in its Small-Batch Whiskey Series with a limited release every month or two, but the first one is very special to the makers and the customers, proving the distillery's aged products are well worth the wait.
"Initial sales of our fist offering in the young whiskey Batch Series were incredible," added Randy McKinley, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for MSW. "Let's just say, the Batch release created one hell of a backdrop as we celebrated the repeal of the Prohibition Act!"
"The release of Batch01 represents a milestone for Manatawny Still Works," added McKinley. "It's also a major step in our long-term commitment to deliver the highest quality handcrafted spirits to people who will love them."
