When I was shopping around for my Friday night pizza, I decided to give Rocco's (517 Kimberton Road) a try. It's been ages since we've done a pizza profile anyways… I wanted something new and different.
I started fumbling through Yelp looking at different reviews of different pizza places in Phoenixville until I came in crossed Rocco's. Honestly I think it's the last remaining pizza place for us to “profile” or even by sampled by us. On the Yelp review, it was mentioned that Rocco's features an upside down pizza, which instantly intrigued me so I decided to call.
When I called to order, we chatted about the upside down pizza features and the woman also informed me that they were now serving what is called a Jersey Shore pizza. This pizza has a sweeter sauce like that you would find in any pizza slice shop on the boardwalk in Jersey. Instantly I became nostalgic and decided to order the Jersey Shore instead. I must note that the woman who took my order was super polite and answered all my questions despite it being a peak pie night (aka busy).
My first sense of the pizza was established when the box was opened and I caught a whiff of the contents. The scent was delightful and I was getting fired up to tear into the pie.
My first bite of the pizza did not go as expected. The crust was chewier than I anticipated, and the sauce was actually sweeter than I expected. The second bite confirmed that the cheese was of high quality, as was the pepperoni. Next, I took a pretty big bite to get all the components in my mouth at the same time and that’s when I determined that this pizza, as a whole, is pretty damn tasty… but it's different. That's actually a good thing if you're looking to deviate from the standard pies served around town.
I also note noticed there was slight burnage on the top and bottom of the crust. I happen to enjoy this phenomenon, because I like my crusts on the crispy side. It enhances the overall experience.
In summary, the true difference between the Jersey shore pie and any other pie, is clearly the sauce. It's sweet and it goes well with extra cheese, if that's your thing. We're going to give this five out of eight slices on the slice ohmmeter and suggest trying it.
